Introduction

The Atta Yojana, a significant initiative by the Indian government, aims to provide affordable wheat flour (commonly known as “atta”) to citizens across the nation. Spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this scheme addresses the rising food prices and ensures food security for vulnerable households.

Key Features:

  1. Subsidized Wheat Flour: Under the Atta Yojana, the government officially sells wheat flour branded as “Bharat Atta” at a highly subsidized rate of Rs 27.50 per kilogram. This pricing is notably lower than the prevailing market rates, which range from Rs 36 to Rs 70 per kilogram.

  2. Distribution Channels: The distribution of Bharat Atta is facilitated through cooperatives such as NAFED (National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India)NCCF (National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation), and Kendriya Bhandar. These agencies operate 800 mobile vans and over 2,000 outlets across the country.

  3. Relief to Consumers: By making Bharat Atta available at an affordable price, the government aims to provide relief to consumers who were previously burdened by high food costs.

  4. Quality Assurance: Bharat Atta maintains quality standards and ensures that citizens receive nutritious wheat flour.

Implementation

  • Pilot Sale: In February, the government conducted a pilot sale of 18,000 tonnes of Bharat Atta at Rs 29.50 per kilogram through Kendriya Bhandars and NAFED as part of the Price Stabilization Fund scheme.
  • Formal Launch: Following the successful pilot, the government officially launched Bharat Atta at the reduced rate of Rs 27.50 per kilogram. Union Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Piyush Goyal flagged off 100 mobile vans carrying Bharat Atta.
  • Wheat Allocation: NAFED, NCCF, and Kendriya Bhandars have been allocated 2.5 lakh tonnes of wheat from the Food Corporation of India (FCI) at Rs 21.50 per kilogram. These agencies convert the wheat into wheat flour and sell it under the brand name “Bharat Atta”.

    Additional Measures

  • Apart from Bharat Atta, these mobile vans and outlets also sell chana dal (branded as Bharat Dal) at Rs 60 per kilogram to control the rise in prices.
  • The government continues to take steps to ensure food security for all citizens, especially those in need.

Conclusion

The Atta Yojana exemplifies the government’s commitment to providing essential food items at affordable rates. By making Bharat Atta accessible to a wide population, this scheme contributes to the well-being of Indian households.
